Water leaks causing up to $1 million in damage, accidental damage by tradies and poor workmanship are among the biggest risks identified in building and renovation insurance claims, new data reveals.

The analysis by Australian insurance comparison site BizCover shows property damage accounts for almost one in three insurance claims (30.5%), making it the most common issue for Aussies in the construction and building industry.

Injury claims account for 22.2%, while shoddy workmanship makes up 15.4% of disputes, meaning roughly one in six claims stem from poor quality work.

BizCover General Manager Brad Miller said while extreme cases can reach up to $1 million, the typical tradie construction insurance claim sits at $6000, showing how quickly costs can escalate.

“Australians are spending billions on renovations each year and this data show how important it is for tradies to have proper insurance and for homeowners to ensure they are hiring qualified professionals.” to have proper insurance and for homeowners to ensure they are hiring qualified professionals.”

“With property prices, stamp duty and moving costs so high, many Australians seem to be choosing to renovate rather than move. That shift is putting more building work into existing homes, which in turn can increase the risks when something goes wrong.”

“What might start as a small mistake on site can quickly snowball into a major financial disaster. A simple water leak, damaged pipe or accidental knock-through can result in repair bills that run into the hundreds of thousands.”

Tradie mistakes most likely to cause costly damage

Plumbing disasters
Water leaks are the most expensive problem on building sites, with extreme cases reaching $1 million and typical high-end payouts around $98,000.

Accidental damage by electricians
Painters are the most likely trade to accidentally damage property (63.9% of claims), followed by electricians. Almost half (41.8%) of electrician claims involve accidental property damage, such as drilling, wiring or installation mistakes.

Injuries on site
Carpenters face the highest injury risks. More than one in three carpenter claims (35.5%) relate to personal injury, reflecting the physical nature of structural building work. Typical high claims are up to $62,000.

Miller said theft of portable equipment is also becoming a growing issue for tradies, particularly carpenters.

The data shows 12.8% of claims now relate to stolen tools and equipment, up from 8.2% three years ago - an increase of more than one third.

“Expensive power tools and equipment make valuable and convenient targets for thieves,” says Miller.

“On top of this concerning trend, building sites are busy environments where multiple trades are often working at the same time. When you combine tight deadlines, complex work and heavy equipment, it’s easy to see how accidents or mistakes can happen.”
